Often prescribed under the brand names Quaalude and Sopor, methaqualone is a prescription sedative. It works similarly to benzodiazepines and barbiturates. Like those other medications, methaqualone is also regularly abused as a recreational drug. 

Commercial manufacture of methaqualone stopped in the mid-1980s due to abuse. Any methaqualone tablets found today are likely to be very old … or counterfeit. Abusing counterfeit drugs is suicidally risky; there’s a constant chance of tainted batches.
